Halo Reach: LASO Weekly Challenge Guide: Part 9 – The Pillar of Autumn: II

Time to finish this sucker off.  Good luck.

(See Part I here.)

The Pillar of Autumn Walkthrough (cont'd):

This first platform you come out to will be your base of operations. You will leave your Plasma Pistol here until it is needed. I will say now that credit for the strategy in the remainder of this guide goes to Tyrant, again. Tell him, "Thank you."

Now run down into the middle floor of the main building and, if you smack this crate, a magic Ammo Crate will pop out of the building. It will either do it inside or outside and it is filled with DMR ammo which you definitely want for later. There are also three health packs in here. Run back up to your safe-zone once you are stocked up.

The first wave will drop in and there will be no real threat. Just stay up on the walkway and use the DMR for the Grunts and Jackals. The Needle Rifle, you will use to Supercombine any Brutes. The regular Brutes will take a single Supercombine will the Chieftains will all take two Supercombines. Be careful with that Needle Rifle ammo, however, because there are no ammo refills anywhere.

Once you have easily decimated the first wave, a second wave will drop in and now is where you need to be at your best. This wave will drop more regular Brutes and lesser Chieftains, but it will also drop two large Chieftains. One will be wielding a Hammer and the other a Fuel Rod Cannon. Now, your preferred weapons will be the Plasma Pistol and the Needle Rifle.

Generally, you want the Hammer Brute to get close, even though that belies logic, and for the Fuel Rod Brute to go trash some Marines. When the Hammer does get close, nail it with the Plasma Pistol while it lobs grenades at you. They are pretty easy to dodge, but watch for the explosion afterwards. Once his shields are dropped, hit him with two Supercombines to seal the kill.

Now, you need to deal with the Fuel Rod. Use the barriers on the walkway for cover and nail him with the Plasma Pistol at distance, but be conservative with your ammo. He will eventually go down the stairs and that is a good time to hammer his shields. This guy will jump around a lot when his shields are down but give him two Supercombines and end his shooting spree.

Now you simply need to mop up the remaining enemies to trigger the third and final wave. By this point, I was out of Needle Rifle ammo and could only use the DMR. Remember that you found the special DMR ammo crate, but only go for it when it is clear. If you have a chance, I would also snag a Needler off the ground for the last large Brute Chieftain.

The final wave will come in and drop another metric ton of Brutes on top of the main building. The large Chieftain will have a Plasma Launcher and that thing is so much more deadly on LASO then it would ever be in any other game mode. I saved this guy for last while taking out all of his support. Use the DMR to strip the headgear from and headshots all of the Brutes and this will cause the Chieftain to flee down to the main area.

He is a lot less lethal down here and all of his shot will miss if you are using the ledges correctly. Once everything has been whittled down, I moved down and engaged him with the Plasma Pistol to drop his shields and followed with two Supercombines from the Needler. Before going to meet up with Keyes, stock up on ammo and health because your fight is not over yet.

You will hand the fragment of Cortana over to Keyes and then the Covies will crash the party. Emile will be killed and you will then need to get to the Mass Driver (technically, it is an industrial and commercial MAC cannon) and take out the cruiser bearing down on The Pillar of Autumn.

As you first start, you will see three Grunts and an Elite outside of the doorway ahead. Headshot all the Grunts, which will make the Elite retreat through the doorway, and then move up.

At the doorway, if you can, headshot the Engineer supplying everyone with shields. Most likely, however, it will move out of range and you will need to eliminate the remaining Grunts when the shield is not active.

Right in the doorway you should be able to pick up a DMR but be careful because a single Elite of the four will be remaining on the ground floor to haunt you. To get him to go up stairs, lay down the drop shield and then use this robotic apparatus as steps to jump onto this ledge. Follow the ledge around and jump onto the second floor. Move up some and this should trigger that Elite to go up to the next floor and stay there. That is not a guarantee though.

Now you should have no issue moving around the bottom floor so stock up on DMR ammo in the far room and get a health pack if you need it. You are going to quickly go up the stairs to the second floor but then make two quick rights when you can and go back here.

Jump onto the railing and then use that to jump on the this robotic arm. After that you will be jumping onto a hanging lamp and then onto this ledge. Follow the ledge all the way around the room and then drop into this area.

Now, are plan here is to only kill the Field Marshall/Zealot Elite with the Fuel Rod. He tends to stay near the Mass Driver and is extremely overpowered. If you walk down to the area where there is a chain link fence, you can take him out with ease.

He cannot shoot through this fence, but you can. His shields will take a lot of hits before they drop and you do not exactly have the best sight lines, but make do, because this is a lot easier then getting raped by this Elite.

Whittle down his shields and then finish him out with a single headshot. Be warned, however, while his Fuel Rod shots cannot pass through, Plasma Grenades can.

Once he is dropped, you want to jump up here and here, but do not get into the cannon. First you need to trigger the attack, by walking up the stairs. But then, you are going to run right back down. There is no way you can destroy all the Banshees and Phantoms before it is time to shoot the Cruiser.

So, instead, we will hide down here. Use you Drop Shield to avoid fire from the remaining Elites who will, for some reason, not close the gap and melee you. Once you here Keyes tell you to shoot now, run up and enter the Mass Driver.

The sad, irritating catch here is that you will need to fire two shots into the Cruiser. Annoying, I know, but in line with every enemy having double health. If you are lucky, it will fade out before you die but, most likely, you will die before getting the second shot off. Therefore, for this part, I am endorsing the "Save and Quit" strategy just before you die. If you are lucky, you will not need to use this, but most likely you will.

After the Cruiser has been wrecked, The Pillar of Autumn will launch and the Chief, with Cortana and Keyes, will be away, off to the first Halo Ring. Congrats, sparing dying in Lone Wolf, you have beaten Halo Reach on Mythic/LASO/SLASO difficulty if you have completed all these challenges.

Thanks for coming here for your guides.
