Halo Reach: LASO Guide - Part 4: Tip of the Spear I

Please follow the blog and/or follow me on Twitter!

Yes, it has been two weeks.  Of course, that means it is time for another LASO Weekly Challenge.  Following the order of the Halo Reach story, this week the mission is Tip of the Spear.  Bungie has done you a huge favor and is still not requiring the "Blind" Skull to be on.  This is a LASO guide, however, and, therefore, has been done with the "Blind" Skull on.  If you need to review LASO difficulty, look here and here.

And this will not be the five-minute cakewalk that Nightfall was.  Expect to spend a good hour or two pulling off this run because you will die a few times.  But, like Nightfall, this mission is very doable solo.  Even though this elevates the mission to SLASO difficulty, I believe it is preferable to having two players.  Remember, in Reach, the enemies scale up for multiple players, therefore making the mission harder.  The only advantage of having teammates is that you just go back to the last checkpoint when you die.

Tip of the Spear Walkthrough:
You start this mission as part of an ultimately doomed "Warthog Rush".  If this was Halo Wars, these guys would be going to victory, but this is Reach and these Warthogs are doomed.  Once you jump the bridge, crash, and gain control of Noble Six.

Immediately, run off to the left and hug the side of the cliff.

It is possible to fall, so be careful and work your way to the rock shown here.

Pop you head up and unload five shots with the Grenade Launcher into the nearest turret.  Once it has been taken out, destroy the other one with a similar five shots.

After both turrets are destroyed, turn to your left and you should see at destroyed Warthog.  Using it as cover, sprint behind it and continue on down the hill.  Eventually, this will cause a Pelican to spawn which will drop in a Rocket Hog.  If the Pelican comes but does not drop the Hog, move back up to hill to trigger the drop.

Once the Hog is dropped, get in and drive off.  Do not worry about Kat since she will be abandoning you in about five minutes anyway.  Drive over the drop and once you are confronted with three Jackals, stop and deal with them anyway you please.

Now it is time to get rid of your driver.  Have him get out of the turret and melee him once or twice and he will stay away.

Now, take the Rocket Hog up the incline.  Stick to the middle so you are not in range of the Ghosts and hammer away at the AA Gun.

There are two ghosts and they might start to bother you, but I was lucky enough to be left alone.  There is one Ghost that floats around the area and you can try to take him out before hand if you wish.  He tends to be near the left passage.

Once you hear the warning sirens and the gun is about to explode, get back in the driver's seat and gun it into the left passage.  You want to head for the bridge area.

You cannot gun it since the bridge has yet to be dropped but, as soon as it is down, make it across as a Wraith will be dropped behind you.  Once you are through, ignore all the enemies until you make it to the mining facility.

Stop short of the bridge to the mining facility and lay waste to all the Covenant on the bridge and eliminate the Shade Turret with the Rocket Hog.  Once the bridge is clear, take out the two Jackals on the far left walkway before crossing and then stroll on across the bridge.

Credit for this next section goes to Tyrant's Mythic guide over at Halo.Bungie.Org (If you do not know about this site, where have you been?).

The fighting in here on Mythic difficulty is a pain.  Instead of doing it, we are going to avoid all of it.  Use the beams, pipe, and ledge under the platform to skip all the fighting in the mining facility.

There will still be two Jackals to deal with, but they should not be much trouble.  Once you have eliminated the Jackals, drop down, pick up the Plasma Launcher and get in the Revenant.

Boost through all enemies until you get to a broken bridge.  Drop down and stay put.  Clear out the jackals, or let them retreat, and then start pounding away at the "Tyrant" AA gun.  Once the alarms sound, the gun is about to go boom.

Part II is here.
