An Intro to LASO/Mythic Difficulty in Halo Reach.

On the heels of the current weekly challenge, tempting members to try the second level of the Halo Campaign on LASO difficulty, I present this guide which will help the not-so-hardcore members of the Halo population a fighting chance at completing this challenge and hopefully beating the whole game this way.

First off, what is LASO?  LASO is an acronym standing for Legenday, All Skulls On.  This means that all thirteen - yes, I said thirteen – skulls need to be enabled and the skill level must be set to Legendary.  Here are a list of all the skulls and how they alter the gameplay.
  • The Iron Skull causes you to restart the mission every time you die.  If you are playing co-op, the game will go back to the last checkpoint.
  • The Mythic Skull causes all enemies to have double health.
  • The Thunderstorm upgrades all the enemies to the highest tier.
  • The Famine Skull causes all weapons dropped onto the ground to have half as much ammo.
  • The Tough Luck Skull causes enemies to evade more often and much faster than normal.  Grunts also whip out double plasmas and go Kamikaze more often.
  • The Cloud Skull hides you radar.
  • The Tilt Skull cause enemies to have stronger defenses and weaker weaknesses.
  • The Catch Skull causes enemies to through a lot more grenades.  Apparently twice as many grenades, but I wouldn’t hold it to that.
  • The Black Eye Skull causes you to have to melee an enemy to regain shields.
  • The Cowbell Skull amplifies the explosion physics in the game cause grenades to pack a lot more “boom, boom.”
  • The Blind Skull hides your entire HUD, reticule, and even you hands and weapon from your view.  Do not worry, though, the Covenant can still see you.
  • The “I Would Have Been Your Daddy” Skull unlocks weird uncommon Combat dialogue and the regular dialogue goes out the window.
  • The Grunt Birthday Party Skull cause a grunts head to explode with confetti if you shoot it.
The skulls that end up having the greatest effect on gameplay are Blind, Mythic, Thunderstorm, Black Eye, and Iron.  Iron is the most troublesome because if you attempt this level SLASO (Solo, Legendary, All Skulls On), you will restart the mission every single time you die.  Your best bet is to play this with a friend or just have an extra controller turned on and signed in sp you only go back to checkpoints.

  1. Are you sure you need to have the blind skull on for this challenge? When I selected "take me to a game lobby appropriate for this challenge" from the halo reach menu, it didn't have the blind skull on.

  2. That appears to be an oversight. From what I have seen you can have the blind skull off and still get the challenge done.

Make it easier on yourself and keep it off.

Don't get used to it though. Expect that when they do the challenge for Nightfall, blind will be back on, otherwise it isn't actually LASO difficulty.

  3. And it makes it sooooo much easier if you start from "Rally Point Bravo" for two reasons 1) it is much much closer to end of level (2) you will restart from the rally point (place when you gun the Helo with the grenade launcher) if you do it SLASO.
